Good morning friends.  I think this is the good idea of the government.  I know many will benefit on that.  I know everybody will be inspired.

To make the city more walker-friendly is the need of the hour. With this in mind, School of Building Science and Technology (SBST) of CEPT University is conducting a study on infrastructure for pedestrians.

Around 100 students are taking part in the study, which is assisted by the traffic police department. The focus will also be on how encroachments, hawkers and haphazard parking that impacts pedestrians. The study will be complete in three weeks.

“Students will walk on different streets to get first-hand experience. They will observe available infrastructure and amenities and collect data on the problem areas as well. The students will be handing over questionnaires to passers-by and also conduct group discussions,” says faculty member of SBST, Reshma Shah.

Areas that are pedestrian-friendly promote business. Infrastructure for walking is an integral part of urban transport planning. It needs to be understood for pavement design and planning for support amenities like street furniture, public toilets and signage.

“Great cities always encourage walking as it promotes health, vibrancy and social interaction. Incorporating pedestrian infrastructure in city plans is a must,” stresses faculty member of School of Planning, Rutul Joshi, who is providing technical support for the ongoing study.

* Crossing roads should be made safer. Junctions should be designed so that traffic has to slow down

* Adequate space should be designated for hawkers and this should be monitored regularly to prevent encroachments
